The SABIS® Educational System

The SABIS® Educational System is distinguished by the philosophy upon which it is based, the goals that it sets, and the approaches and methods that it employs to accomplish these goals. It provides a sound, thorough and high-level education.

What Makes This System Unique

SABIS® believes that an intelligent approach produces better results. Excellent results are achieved by:

  • Planning and preparing
  • Teaching methodically and comprehensively, using SABIS® teaching methods
  • Conducting frequent and regular testing
  • Continuous and appropriate follow-up
  • Encouraging active student participation in the education process

Everything possible is done to ensure success and no one who studies in a school in the SABIS® School Network is allowed to 'fail in peace'.

Planning and Preparing

Thorough preparation precedes teaching. Every course is researched structured, and described in terms of clearly stated objectives. A plan for every subject at each stage is prepared. Each plan is complete: it includes all of the 'points' to be taught and the skills to be developed; it is detailed: each objective is precise and measurable; it is paced: progress is charted against a timeline. The plan for each stage dovetails with that of the following stage, ensuring that nothing essential to further learning is omitted, and enabling the transition from year to year to be smooth and successful.

Teaching Methods

The whole class is taught together, using the unique SABIS® 'Point System'. The key concepts of a lesson are listed. Each concept is taught interactively, alternating oral work, individual written work, and group checking. Class time is utilized for building a solid foundation of knowledge through interacting, analyzing, forming and expressing opinions, effectively discussing issues based on critical thinking and logical reasoning.

The various teaching methods that are used and the pace that is set stimulate students by keeping them interested and channeling their enthusiasm. When in class, students learn actively: they do not simply listen to lengthy explanations or take dictated notes.

Testing & Monitoring

Continuous evaluation of student learning is an integral part of the instructional process in the SABIS® system. Frequent and regular testing is conducted in order to evaluate student learning and permit timely, positive intervention. Testing students in this way has a number of very important advantages:

  1. students are trained to perform well under the pressure of time and other constraints
  2. students develop the ability to focus and to sustain concentration for increasingly long periods
  3. the feedback from testing allows close monitoring and follow-up

The proprietary SABIS® Software Systems provide many programs that allow prompt and reliable assessment of student knowledge as well as effective follow-up. One such program, the SABIS® Academic Monitoring System™ (SABIS® AMS™), is used to assess student knowledge of every concept taught. The SABIS® AMS™ pinpoints 'gaps' in student knowledge. Working as a team, teachers and students then focus their efforts on 'filling the gaps'. The SABIS® AMS™ allows the progress of every student to be continuously monitored, problem areas to be identified, and the most appropriate solutions to be implemented.

Follow-Up

The progress of every student is continuously followed up, and students are given the support they need. All available means are used to help those who fall behind to catch up. They are advised in study techniques, motivated by the academic staff, and encouraged by receiving help from peer-tutors or teachers. In the SABIS® School Network, no one is left to his or her own devices.

SABIS Student Life Organization®

The schools in the SABIS® School Network firmly believe that education has the power to change the world. The SABIS® Student Life Organization (SABIS® SLO™), a distinctive and an integral part of the SABIS® Educational System, gives students the opportunity to develop ‘life’ skills that empower them to make a difference.

The SABIS® SLO™ is the students’ mini-society. Prefects who are selected – not elected – manage the SABIS® SLO™. All students are encouraged to join the SABIS® SLO™ and to take an active part in their education, both at the academic and the non-academic domains. Prefects are valuable assets to their schools, working in cooperation with administrative and academic staff. They help to raise the general standard, promote high social and moral values, and encourage participation in a wide range of activities. Student Life Coordinators allocate ‘real-life’ tasks to students, and advise and support them in all of their efforts.

  • Academic Department

Prefects in charge of academic progress select students who need help. They also select able student-teachers to teach students in need of help. Prefects in this department promote high efficiency of learning by stopping disruptive behavior and reporting low efficiency teaching methods.

  • Activities Department

Prefects in this department organize and supervise educational school activities.

  • Sports Department

Prefects of the sports department organize activities other than those of (but coordinated with) the PE department.

  • Discipline Department

Prefects in charge of this department fight wrong doing of any nature - bullying, cheating, vandalizing, littering, being late to class, etc.

  • Management Department

Prefects in this department manage and check on the activities of all other departments.

The activities of the SLO® bring major advantages. Students are helped to become responsible and caring citizens through learning to:

    • Reverse negative attitudes
    • Improve general standards
    • Promote constructive thinking
    • Experience real-life work and responsibilities
    • Improve their communication and social skills

While being involved and having a good time, students acquire and refine the skills, attitudes and attributes that give them an edge. Having demonstrated that they have a broad base of abilities and experiences and that they can be effective team-players, top universities from around the world are eager to attract and accept them. It is these same skills, attitudes and attributes, learned and developed in the SLO™, that make 'SABIS® graduates' successful at university and beyond.
